Negotiating with the ATO about a tax debt can be tough. Here’s one tip to help you in those negotiations.
Hi, it’s Catriona from Hartigan Law.
In this video, I’m sharing a tip to help you in your negotiations with the tax office, whether that be for a payment plan or a remission of general interest charge. And that tip is basically to draw a line between what’s happened in the past and what you’re going to do in the future, to show the tax office that you have turned over a new leaf and you’re going to be tax compliant in the future.
So what I mean by that is you need to start lodging everything that you have to lodge on time. So usually that’s your BAS every quarter and your tax return at the end of the year. And also make sure that you pay the amounts that you owe under those lodgements on time and pay the exact amount so that the tax office can very clearly see that what you’re paying is intended to be the payment of that recent lodgement.
I find that this helps to show the tax office that you really do want to sort out your tax debt. And so when it comes to negotiating a payment plan or a remission of general interest charge, they can see that you’re trying to do the right thing and that helps them to help you.
If you are trying to negotiate with the tax office and you’re having some trouble, feel free to give me a call and we can have a chat about what I can do to help.
